Description Extended Information

This rare American Express Company stock certificate was issued to Buffalo, NY legend George W. Tifft and signed by founders William G. Fargo and his partner Henry Wells (aka Wells Fargo).

American Express was founded by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo and J.W. Butterfield in 1850 in Buffalo, NY. Just two years later, Wells and Fargo would also start Wells Fargo & Co. Together they founded two of the most iconic companies in American History.

This amazing American Express Stock Certificate was issued to George W. Tifft. Henry Wells signed as President and William Fargo signed as Secretary. It was also signed by Alexander Holland as Treasurer who was the son-in-law of founder John Butterfield. The certificate was issued in 1866 when William G. Fargo would have also been serving as the Mayor of Buffalo, New York.

George Washington Tifft
Tifft moved to Buffalo in 1842 until he passed in 1882. He entered the milling business and later opened the Troy and Michigan Six-Day Line, named so because it was closed on Sundays. His fortune and holdings grew and he helped establish the International Bank of Buffalo in 1844 and would serve as its first president. In 1858 he became the president of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad which connected Buffalo and Corning with New York. His wealth and interests grew immensely with the development of almost 75 houses, a hotel (Tifft House), vast farmlands, real estate, steam engines, milling, mining and even furniture.

Fantastic piece of American and Buffalo, New York History!

Stock certificate is cancel punched but not X'ed out so the signatures display great.
