Description Extended Information

This rare American Express Company stock certificate was issued in 1866 and signed by founder William G. Fargo and his partner Henry Wells (aka Wells Fargo). American Express was founded by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo and J.W. Butterfield in 1850 in Buffalo, NY. Just two years later, Wells and Fargo would also start Wells Fargo & Co. Together they founded two of the most iconic companies in American History.

Henry Wells signed as President and William G Fargo signed as Secretary. It was also signed by Alexander Holland as Treasurer who was the son-in-law of founder John Butterfield. The certificate was issued in 1866 when William G. Fargo would have also been serving as the Mayor of Buffalo, New York.

This American Express Stock Certificate was issued to Charles D. Middlebrook of Oswego. Records show Middlebrook was a Deacon at the West Baptist Church in Oswego from 1863 to 1873. He was also a partner in Middlebrook & Mack which operated the Kingsford Foundry & Machine Works in the 1870s. The company survived to at lest the 1960s.
