This scarce American Merchants Union Express Company stock certificate was hand signed by William G. Fargo (aka Wells Fargo) in 1868. Nice clear, uncancelled signature. In 1866 the Merchants Union Express Company was formed to compete with American Express. Competing in many of the same routes, a fierce price war ensued. Within months, Merchants Union lost millions. American Express bought out the failing company in 1868 and it was renamed American Merchants Express Company with William G. Fargo taking over as President. In 1973 it was absorbed into American Express.

American Express was founded by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo and J.W. Butterfield in 1850 in Buffalo, NY. Just two years later, Wells and Fargo would also start Wells Fargo & Co. Together they founded two of the most iconic companies in American History.
