Description Extended Information

This rare American Express Company stock certificate was issued in 1873 and signed by founder William G. Fargo (aka Wells Fargo). American Express was founded by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo and J.W. Butterfield in 1850 in Buffalo, NY. Just two years later, Wells and Fargo would also start Wells Fargo & Co. Together they founded two of the most iconic companies in American History.

Henry Wells signed as President and Alexander Holland signed as Treasurer who was the son-in-law of founder John Butterfield.

This American Express Stock Certificate was issued to William H. Clark of Watertown, Wisconsin. It is signed by William H. Clark and A.L. Pritchard on the back. The Bank of Watertown, Wisconsin was founded by A.L. Pritchard in 1854. Pritchard was a New York Financier. William H. Clark, also a New Yorker, moved to Watertown and organized the bank. He was the banks cashier, a highly respected position in the bank and an elected position by the board of directors. The Bank of Watertown remained operational during the Civil War when many Wisconsin banks lost public faith and closed. Prichard never moved to Watertown and the daily operations largely fell to Clark. Today, the bank now operates as M&I Bank of Watertown.
