This rare Chicago Board of Trade Member Ticket was issued in 1883 and is hand-signed by CBOT President James B. Hobbs. Hobbs was considered one of the most prominent Methodist laymen of Chicago. Born in Maine, he came to Chicago in 1856 and entered the produce and commission business for over thirty years. He was also a member of the CBOT for over thirty years and served as President in 1883. He was the Prohibition candidate for Governor for Illinois in 1884 and was secretary of the Prohibition National Committee from 1888 to 1889.

The Membership was for John H. Jones who was an active and influential member for over 35 years. He was considered a "popular" member who contributed to the high commercial prestige of the Board of Trade. He served as a Director for three years and as Vice President for two years. He was a member of the Chicago Athletic Club and Glenview Golf Club and was one the "popular bachelors" of Western Chicago. - History of the Board of Trade of the City of Chicago edited by Charles H.
