Description Extended Information

This rare Territory Warrant issued by the Territory of Montana was issued for $8 for the "Bounty for one bear scalp" in 1883. Issued in the County of Lewis & Clark, Helena, Montana. This is a very rare warrant issued prior to the repeal of the bounty legislation in Montana. It features a vignette of a prospector and his dog on the left and a dog on the bottom of the warrant. It was hand-signed by the Montana Territory Treasurer and Auditor. This is the earliest example of this warrant we can find and later issues are very scarce as well.

Bounties on the predators of live stock in the Territory of Montana became prevalent in the 1880s. Territory legislation offered bounties for Wolves, Coyotes, Bears and Mountain Lions. By the end of 1887, the bounties became so numerous that the Montana Territory could no longer afford to pay them and the bounty laws were repealed. Under pressure form live stock owners, the bounties were re-instated in 1899 and funded via a new live stock tax. These bounties led to the total extermination of wolves in Montana by the 1920s.
