This hand-colored antique map of St. Louis and Chicago was made by the famous map making family Colton around 1871. Details feature the Mississippi River and the shores of Lake Michigan. Rail lines, streets, parks and buildings are also detailed as well as coloring of the wards.

J.H. Colton was a prominent map maker in the United States in the 19th Century. His first atlas, Colton's Atlas of the World was issue in two volumes in 1855 and 1856. Sons G.W. and C.W joined the firm and both became accredited on maps around 1857.
