Description

The Movie Rogue Trader staring Ewan McGregor is based upon Nick Leeson. Leeson was a derivatives trader for Barings Bank, the oldest merchant bank in the U.K. Leeson was a star at Barings Bank, at one point accounting for 10% of their annual profits. Unfortunately it was based off of unauthorized and speculative trades. He began to accumulate mounting losses and then placed larger bets to make up for those losses.

In 1995 he placed a large bet that the Japanese stock market would not move much overnight. Early that morning, the Great Hanshin Earthquake hit. His losses hit $1.4 billion. He left a note saying he was "sorry" and took off to Singapore. He was eventually caught, arrested, and plead guilty in court. He was sentenced to 6.5 years and served just under 4.5 years in prison. His autobiography Rogue Trader was published in 1996 and made into the movie three years later.

Nick Leeson teamed up with an autograph dealer in the U.K. to seller various autographed items. One of these items that they produced were these mini-replica trader jackets. They were based off his actually trading jacket that he wore at Barings Bank. His actual trading jacket sold at auction for 21,000 pounds. We don't know how many were made but this is the first one we have come across making them pretty rare, especially in the U.S.
