Description

This Bear Stearns Collateralized Mortgage Obligation Specimen Bond was printed in 1988. It was a zero coupon bond due in 2018. It was Mortgage deals like this one that lead to their demise and the Financial Crisis of 2008.

Prior to its sale to JP Morgan Chase in 2008, Bear Stearns was one of the largest investment banks in the world. In 2007 Bear Stearns was badly damaged by the subprime mortgage crisis. After an emergency loan from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York failed to save the company, it was sold to JP Morgan Chase for a price well below its one time high of over $100.00 per share.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
