This Boston and Providence Railroad Stock Certificate was issued in 1895 and is hand-signed by the company president Royal C. Taft. Taft served as the 39th Governor of Rhode Island and a member of the Taft political family including President William Howard Taft. Royal Taft also served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives. He served as president of Merchants National Bank, director of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and president of the Boston and Providence Railroad. He was a charter member of the Rhode Island Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Taft Hall at the University of Rhode Island and the Royal C. Taft Outpatient Building at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence was named after him.

The Boston and Providence Railroad was founded in 1831 and is now part of Amtrack's Northeast Corridor.
