Description Extended Information

This rare Canada Southern Railway Company Bond certificate was hand-signed by Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr. in the 1880s. Cornelius Vanderbilt II was the favorite grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt and the eldest son of William Henry Vanderbilt and succeeded him as President and Chairman of the New York Central Railroad and took over the Vanderbilt Empire.

The Canada Southern Railway was founded in 1868 as the Erie and Niagara Extension Railway and changed it's name to the Canada Southern Railway later in the same year. When the railway fell into financial trouble after the Panic of 1873, it was taken over by Cornelius Vanderbilt for virtually no cost other than guaranteeing their existing bonds and obligations.

The line was leased to the Michigan Central Railroad and later subleased to the New York Central Railroad and its successors Penn Central and Conrail. The railroad was purchased by the Canadian National Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1985.

Gorgeous bond with a nice signature. Oversized 13.5" x 9"
