Description

This cigar box features the CBOT building that was originally erected in 1885. It would become the tallest building in Chicago at the time. In 1895, due to shoddy construction, the clock tower - which made it the tallest building, was removed. The cigar box features the building with the clock tower removed. The building was then determined to be structurally unsound, built on a foundation surrounded by muck, and was torn down in 1929. The new building, which they now reside, was built across the street and finished in 1930.

The cigars were from a company called L& I Rubovits. Rubovits Cigars was established in 1894 in Chicago by Louie and Izzie Rubovits. They were actually located in the Chicago Board of Trade building shown on the box until 1930 when they sold their store to their partner Joe Loeser. They are still selling cigars today.
