This Gold Bond was issued by the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis Railway Company in 1884 and is hand-signed by company president General John Henry Devereaux. Devereaux was a civil engineer and one of the most prolific railmen during the Civil War era. As a Colonel in the Union Army he was the superintendent of Railroads for Virginia. He retired as General in 1864 and became president of the Cleveland ,Columbus, Cincinnati & Indianapolis Railway in 1873.

The railway was founded in 1836 and construction began in 1847 with a line from Cleveland to Columbus. They acquired a portion of the Springfield, Mt. Vernon and Pittsburgh Railroad in 1861 and merged with the Bellefontaine Railway in 1868. It later would become part of the New York Central Railroad Company.
