This rare Commercial Bank of Keokuk, Iowa Stock Certificate was issued in 1872 and is hand-signed by the company president R.F. Bower, VP & secretary E. Jaeger, and Cashier John Hobbs. Features a nice George Washing 25 cent revenue stamp.

R.F. Bower started a wholesale grocer in Keokuk in 1856 which grew regionally to include Iowa, Missouri and Illinois with annual sales of about $400,0000 by the 1870s. He would become president of the Commercial Bank of Keokuk, the Keokuk Loan & Building Association, and a Director of the Iowa State Insurance Company. His contributions to the local library made it one of the premier libraries in the West. Bower's collection of Masonic books was considered to be the most valuable in the world.

Bower was actively involved in the Masons and was dubbed a Knight Templar and served as Grand High Priest, Grand Master, and General Grand King of the Masons. He was the highest level 33 degree Mason and received the Royal Order of Scotland.
