This General Telephone & Electronics Corp $100,000 Bond Certificate was issued to Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith in 1977. Now known as GTE, General Telephone was largest independent telephone company outside of the Bell System.  They were founded in 1926 as the Associated Telephone Utilities and reorganized as General Telephone in 1934 after bankruptcy. They merged with Bell Atlantic in 2000 to become Verizon Communications and the GTE division would become Verizon West.
