This rare Georgia Rail Road & Banking Company Stock Certificate was issued in 1849 and is hand-signed by the company president John P. King. Based out of Augusta, GA, incorporated in 1833.

John Pendleton King was a lawyer, judge, plantation owner and politician. He served as the Senator for the state of Georgia and as president of the Georgia Rail Road and Banking Company for almost 40 years. He is the namesake of the city Kingston, Georgia. Pendleton King Park in Augusta was named after his grandson who died at an early age.

The Georgia Rail Road & Banking Company was chartered in 1833 in Augusta, Georgia as a rail road which was later amended to include banking. The line ran from Augusta to Athens and branched to Madison and later Atlanta.

Condition: as pictured, some old tape repairs on the back.
