This Great Western Financial Corporation stock certificate was issued in 1987. Great Western Corp was founded in 1955 as a holding company for the Great Western Savings and Loan Association. They changed their name to Great Western Financial in 1956. They purchased dozens of S&Ls throughout California and the West. They began expansion throughout the U.S. in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1997 they were subject to a hostile takeover but decided to be acquired by Washington Mutual. Washington Mutual collapsed during the Financial Crisis of 2008. They would become the largest bank failure in U.S. History. They are now owned by JPMorgan Chase.
