Description Extended Information

This Groveland Improvement Company stock certificate is un-issued from the 1890s. Incorporated November 16, 1891 with principle place of business in Dungeness, Washington. In 1890, New Dungeness, Washington was relocated a mile east and renamed Dungeness. It was located at the mouth of the Dungeness River. Charles Franklin Seal, the president of the Groveland Improvement Company (and the Farmers Mercantile Company) built a dock which extended almost 3/4 mile into deep water. The dock became the main outlet for shipping in the county and made Dungeness one of the most prosperous cities on the Sound.

In 1925, the Port of Port Angeles purchased the dock and it was used until 1941. The remains of the dock can still be seen in a long row of decaying pilings.
