Hoover was in office during the Crash of 1929 and the following Great Depression. He widely blamed Mexican Americans for the crisis and repatriated almost two million Mexican Americans to Mexico. He was soundly defeated by Franklin Delaware Roosevelt in 1932 as his response to the economic crisis was not popular.
