Galusha Grow was Speaker of the US House of Representatives from 1861 to 1863 and was elected to the 37th Congress. Grow served as the 24th Speaker of House during the early years of the Civil War. He was one of the leaders behind the Homestead Act of 1862. Grow ran for re-election as Speaker and was defeated making him the last sitting Speaker of the House to lose his seat for over 100 years until Tom Foley's loss in 1994.

Formed in 1873 through the merger of the International Railroad and the Houston and Great Northern Railroad, the International Rail Road Company of Texas grew to over 1100 miles of track. It ran from Hearne to Longview down to Rockdale and then Austin, Texas and then eventually to San Antonio. In 1881 they expanded to the Mexican border town of Laredo. Jay Gould took control of the railway in 1880.
