This large hand-colored old map of New York and the surrounding area was published by A.J. Johnson and Benjamin Ward. The map is from Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas. The map features details New York with insets of Oswego, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, Troy and Manhattan although it does not appear to yet be named as well as details of Long Island and Queens

A.J. Johnson was a prominent map maker in the United States in the 19th Century. He worked along side Colton in his early days before branching out on his own. His first major publication was Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas.
