Pets.com is a perfect example of the high-flying dotcom boom and bust of the late 1990s. Pets.com began operations in 1998 with a massive marketing campaign that featured their famous sock puppet mascot and he was even featured in a Super Bowl Commercial in 2000. The sock puppet was even featured in an interview in People Magazine, Good Morning America and of course - Mad Magazine. The company went defunct in the dotcom bubble and they liquidated just two years after they began in November of 2000.

At one point, Amazon owned 54% of the company. Their rise and fall became symbolic of the dot com bubble. Their domain now points to PetSmart today.
