Description Extended Information

The Manhattan Company was founded in 1799 with $2 million in capital stock to fund the City of New York with water. Aaron Burr inserted a provision into the charter to allow surplus capital to be used in any business not in violation of the state or federal constitution. He then used the surplus capital to start the Bank of the Manhattan Company. The Manhattan Company merged with Chase in 1955 for form Chase Manhattan which now would be known as JPMorgan Chase. The Manhattan Company is the oldest charter and predecessor of the current JPMorgan Chase Company.

This Manhattan Company stock certificate was issued in 1940.
