Description Extended Information

This Rare Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Specimen Stock Certificate was from the 1970s. Merrill Lynch was founded in 1914 by Charles Merrill, when Edmund Lynch joined the company just a year later the name was changed to Merrill Lynch and Company. After several mergers the name eventually became Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, & Smith in 1958. Merrill Lynch was bought by Bank of America in 2009 as a result of the 2008 financial crisis but some of the divisions kept the Merrill Lynch name including Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and the Broker Dealer Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith. Features Donald Regan as Chairman of the Board.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
