Description Extended Information

This rare $5000 Michigan Central Railroad bond was issued to W.H. Vanderbilt and was hand-signed by Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr. as vice-president in the 1881. It is certificate #17. Cornelius Vanderbilt II was the favorite grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt and the eldest son of William Henry Vanderbilt (W.H.) and succeeded him as President and Chairman of the New York Central Railroad and took over the Vanderbilt Empire.

The Michigan Central Railroad was formed in 1846 to provide service between Detroit and St. Joseph Michigan. It later expanded in to Indiana, Illinois, and Ontario Canada. The company later became part of The New York Central Railroad and then Penn Central and Conrail. In 1998 Conrail was broken up and the railroad became part of Norfolk Southern.
