Description Extended Information

This Northern Pacific Railroad Company $1000 bond certificate was issued in 1954. The company was founded by an Act of Congress, signed by President Lincoln in 1864 making it the largest land grant in American history. Much of its route was determined by the Lewis and Clark expedition and was America's second trans-continental railroad.

Frederick Billings was a 49er traveling to California in search of gold. He became one of the wealthiest men in California and reorganized the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1873. Billings, Montana was named after him.

The Northern Pacific Railroad was one of the original members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Added July 3, 1884.
