Description Extended Information

This rare Pima County Bank Check of Tombstone, Arizona was issued to William Addis Bourland in 1880 and hand-signed by the bank manger P.W. Smith. W.A. Bourland was the husband of the famous witness of the Gunfight at the OK Corral, Addie Bourland. William and his wifre Addie moved to Tombstone in 1880. He opened a shop selling cigars, tobacco, pipes, stationary, confections and other goods which was located on Fifth between Allen and Fremont. His wife Addie Bourland opened a dress making shop at 523 Fremont Street

Gunfight at the OK Corral
On October 26, 1881 Addie became the primary witness to the gunfight between the Earps, Doc Holliday, and the McLaury Brothers and Billy Clanton. The Earps and Doc Holliday were charged with murder. The Bourland's lived across from Fly's lodging house giving her a front row seat to the shootout out of her window. Her testimony became key to the exoneration of Wyatt Earp and his brothers as well as Doc Holiday. Addie's role and testimony is a well documented part of Tombstone's history.

Tombstone
Tombstone was founded in 1879 in the Arizona Territory after the discovery of silver. By 1881 the population grew to over 7000 making it the largest boomtown in the Southwest. The population with migrant workers, women and children were estimated to be as large as 20,000. There were only two banks in Tombstone at the time.

The Pima County Bank opened in Tucson in 1879 and opened an Agency (as indicated on this check) in Tombstone in the spring of 1880. Its name was changed to the Cochise County Bank in 1882.

Excellent condition.
