Description Extended Information

This S.D. Warren Company Stock Certificate was issued to themselves as treasury stock in 1926. Scarce, early version stock certificate. Samuel Dennis Warren, known as S.D., purchased a paper mill in Westbrook, Maine in 1854 which began the Grant, Warren and Company. The mill ran two paper machines which produced 3000 pounds of paper per day. The paper was made by beating and using the pulp from rags.

In 1867 the mill was changed to the S.D. Warren Paper Mill Company. Wood fibers were added to the rags to make paper, the first to do so in the U.S and they became the largest paper mill in the world. By 1880 they were producing over 35,000 lbs of paper per day. After his death, his son took over operation until he passed in 1910. The mill employ over 3000 people in Westbrook.

The S.D. Warren Company was bought by the Scott Paper Company in 1967. It operated as a wholly owned subsidiary through 1994 when it sold it to a South African Company SAPPI Limited. The Mill is registered on the list of National Historic Places.
