Description Extended Information

This SBC Communications specimen stock certificate was printed in 1995. Southwestern Bell dates back to 1882 as the Missouri and Kansas Telephone Company, eventually becoming the Bell Telephone company of Missouri and then Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Southwestern Bell Corporation was one of the many companies formed with the breakup of AT&T in 1982, a baby Bell. SBC Communications was a regional holding company that specialized in local, Wireless, internet service in the United States and internationally. After acquisitions of similar companies, in 2005, SBC Communications merged with AT&T and now operates under the AT&T name.

Added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average January 27, 2003.

Specimen certificates are old stock certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
