The San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad was originated on Jan. 29th 1895.  On Jan. 17th 1895 sugar magnate Claus Spreckels offered $500,000.00 to begin the railway if the additional 3 Million could be raised.  In just a couple of weeks this amount was raised primarily through small investments from all over California, this lead to the nickname of "The People's Railroad".  The need for the railroad stemmed from the monopoly that the Southern Pacific Railroad held over the area agriculture and industry.  Issued in 1895.  Vignette of a Stream Train.
