Description Extended Information

This rare Standard Oil Specimen Stock Certificate was printed in 1920s-30s and features William Smith as President. Founded by John D. Rockefeller in 1870, Standard Oil would become the largest Oil company in the world. It made Rockefeller the wealthiest person in history and one of the most powerful. In 1911, Standard Oil was ruled a Monopoly by the Supreme Court and subsequently broken up into 43 smaller regional companies.

This specimen Standard Oil Stock Certificate features William Smith as President.

Added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average February 6, 1924.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
