The Atlantic Refining Company was founded in 1866 as the Atlantic Petroleum Storage Company. By 1874 the company had changed it's name to Atlantic Refining and was purchased by John D. Rockefeller and was part of Standard Oil. In 1911, as a result of the Sherman Antitrust Act, the Standard Oil Trust was broken up and Atlantic was one of 35 companies that were broken off from the trust.

Atlantic Richfield Company, commonly referred to as ARCO, was founded in 1966 with the merger of Atlantic Refining and Richfield Oil Company. In 1969 it merged with Sinclair Oil Corporation. ARCO has had as many as 1300 gas stations primarily in the western United States. The company was bought by BP in 2000, Andeavor in 2013 and Marathon Petroleum in 2018 This stock certificate was issue in 1966 and features a woman with a globe in front of oil fields and a refinery.
