Description Extended Information

This Boston Marine Insurance Company stock certificate is un-issued from the 1890ss. The Boston Marine Insurance Company dates back to 1797 and insured ship's cargos for foreign and domestic trading voyages. Records show they were incorporated in 1799.

In colonial times, marine insurance was primarily underwritten by wealth citizens who pledged a portion of the vessel's cargo value if it was lost at sea. The owner of the vessel paid them for this protection. It was known as a Marine Insurance Policy. The first company incorporated in the U.S. for marine insurance was charted in 1794.

The company was the subject of U.S. Supreme Court Case in 1804, Graves and Barnewall v Boston Marine Insurance Company.
