Description Extended Information

This Cincinnati, Washington and Baltimore Railroad Stock Certificate is signed by Civil War Brigade General Orland Smith. Smith was a commander in the Union Army that took the hill in the Battle of Wauhatchie that now bears his name, Smith's Hill. His men also held Cemetery Hill on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. On the second day his regiment helped to repel the attack by Brig. General Harry T. Hays' "Louisiana Tigers". After the war, he became president of the Cincinnati, Washington and Baltimore Railroad and then Vice President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

Originally formed as the Belpre and Cincinnati Railroad in 1845 and then the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, it was absorbed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O). In 1882 when taken over by the B&O it's name was changed to the Cincinnati, Washington, and Baltimore Railroad and then again to the B&O in 1889. Issued in the 1880s. Vignette on the right features a steam engine at the station with a nearby horse drawn carriage.
