Description Extended Information

This Co-Operative Pure Milk Association stock certificate was un-issued. The Co-Op was founded in 1923 and was based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. They purchased milk from dairy farmers in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania. The Co-op was formed so the small farmer could get better milk prices than trying to sell it on their own. The Pure Milk Association had trouble selling their milk to processors because they did not want to give them the power to set market prices. So they began to process their own milk and established retail routes throughout the Cincinnati region.

Competing processors began a price war in an effort to destroy the Co-Op. The price war proved costly and eventually the two side began to work together rather than fight each other. At one point, the Pure Milk Association was the largest dairy co-operative in the U.S.
