This Greenbrier White Sulphur Springs Company $500 Bond Certificate was issued in 1882 and is hand-signed by the company president Henry Mason Mathews. The Greenbrier is a four star resort located in White Sulphur Spring of Greenbrier Country, West Virginia. Now owned by the CSX Corporation, it was owned by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway for most of its life. Every U.S. President since Eisenhower has stayed at the Greenbrier.

Henry Mason Mathews was the Governor of West Virginia from 1877 to 1881. He was a Major of Artillery in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was elected to the senate in 1865. He was denied his seat due to is position in the Confederate Army. He was the Attorney General of West Virginia from 1873 to 1877 before being elected to Governor. After his term, he became the president of the Greenbrier White Sulphur Spring Company.
