This rare Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph Company Specimen $5000 Bond Certificate is from 1948. The history of Mountain States Telephone dates back to 1879 when three entrepreneurs secured a franchise from the American Bell Telephone Company and opened the Denver Dispatch Company and later became the Colorado Telephone Company. Settlers in the West were isolated from the world and telephone service was critical. The company spent years stringing lines and installing switchboards and operators. Expenses built and eventually growth and operations came to a halt.
In 1911, Colorado Telephone Company, Tri-State Telephone and Rocky Mountain Bell merged to form the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company. They became Mountain Bell in 1969 and service spread over several states including Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Montana, Southern Idaho, Wyoming and parts of Texas.
About Specimens: Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
