Originally formed in 1853 with the combining of approximately 10 independent companies, The New York Central Railroad operated some of the first permanent rail tracks in the state of New York. This New York Central Railroad stock certificate is a fairly scarce version issued in 1934 for 100 shares. Features Cornelius Vanderbilt in the vignette. Cornelius Vanderbilt was nicknamed the "Commodore" and was one of the richest people in American history.

The New York Central Railroad was one of the original members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average added July 3, 1884.
