Originally formed in 1853 with the combining of approximately 10 independent companies, The New York Central Railroad operated some of the first permanent rail tracks in the state of New York. This New York Central Stock Certificate was issued in the 1950s-60s and features Cornelius Vanderbilt in the vignette. Cornelius Vanderbilt was nicknamed the "Commodore" and was one of the richest people in American history.

The New York Central Railroad was one of the original members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average added July 3, 1884.
