Building and Loan association became popular from the 1830s - 1930s to increase the accessibility of home loans. Participants would pool their money into these "B&Ls" and in return they would be eligible for mortgages and dividends. During the Great Depression, many B&Ls suffered to turn a profit which led to the Federal Government to get involved. These Building and Loan association would eventually become the federal saving and loans we know today which are backed by FDIC insurance.

This United States Building, Mutual Loan and Accumulating Fund Association stock certificate is unissued and from the 1890s. Albany, N.Y. Rare
