Description Extended Information

This rare Winchester Repeating Arms Company stock certificate was issued to the trust of Hanna J. Bennett who was the daughter of Oliver Winchester, the founder of the Winchester Repeating Arms.

Hannah Jane Winchester married Yale Graduate Thomas Grey Bennett and had three children. Her father Oliver Winchester died in 1880 and turned the company over to his son William Winchester you passed just a year later. The company was taken over by Williams Brother in-law W.W. Converse and Hannah's husband Thomas Grey Bennett. Bennett was the sales manager and took over as president in 1890 until 1910.

He successfully purchased several of John Browning's designs including the Model 1885 and also introduced Winchester's first shotgun. After a quarrel with Browning over royalties, he broke off the relationship and lost the rights to the Model 1897 which was one of the most significant firearms of the 20th century. Hannah and Thomas's son, Winchester Bennett would become president in 1915. Unable to deal with the stress, he left the company and was treated for addiction. His father Thomas Gray Bennett would re-take control from 1918-1919.

Oliver Winchester
Oliver Winchester purchase a division of the failing Smith & Wesson company known as the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in 1855. He changed the name to the New Haven Arms Company shortly after. The company struggled until his engineer, Benjamin Tyler Henry, improved on the design and what became known as the Henry Rifle in 1860. After the success of the Henry Rifle, he changed the company name to Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

Pioneers quickly flocked to the Winchester rifle and it became known as "The Gun that Won the West."

Issued in 1929.
